Aristotle, the great Greek philosopher added a fifth element- Aether (element of the heavens) to the above four.
Although only four to five building blocks were proposed, attempts were made to classify them. Using the classification, certain phenomena in nature were explained by Aristotle.

The elements suggested by Aristotle and others prevailed for almost two millenia.



Aristotle's table is the precursor to the Periodic Table.
Hot and cold was explained in terms of presence or absence of fire.
Wood, since it gives ash and heat on burning was considered to be made up of Earth and Fire.
